SPACE

Nashville Child and Family Wellness Center offers SPACE – Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

What is SPACE?

SUPPORTIVE PARENTING FOR ANXIOUS CHILDHOOD EMOTIONS

Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE is a treatment program designed for parents of children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, or other related concerns. Rather than directly focusing on changing the child’s behavior, SPACE empowers parents to modify their own responses to improve the child’s anxiety and related symptoms.

What anxiety problems are treated with SPACE?

  • Generalized anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Separation anxiety
  • Fears and phobias
  • Panic disorder and agoraphobia
  • Selective mutism
  • Other anxiety-related concerns may benefit but should be addressed with a therapist

PROGRAM GOALS

What is the parent committing to when they enroll in SPACE?

Willingness to learn skills and strategies that help their child overcome anxiety-related concerns.

Readiness to attend sessions and practice tasks assigned by the therapist between sessions.

Openness to reflect on family dynamics and how anxiety is currently being maintained in the home.

Commitment to make effective changes to their own behavior with the support of a therapist.
